Matt’s Preparation for a World Record Pull-up Attempt - A 60 Second pull-up WR!

October 25, 2007 by Jimson Lee

UPDATE: This record is now official. Congratulations Matt!

Matt Bogdanowicz will be attempting a 30 minute pull-ups World Record attempt on October 27.

With the big event one week away, how does Matt prepare for such an event?

By participating in a 60 second WR attempt of maximum pull-ups!

The result? 46. The previous World Record was 44. The paperwork and videos for verification and ratification have been submitted.

In the event, two cameras were used at the same time. One focused solely on the chin, as it only has to clear the bar by a millimeter if necessary.

This is similar to a pole vauler or high jumper who brushes the bar without knocking it down. Or a high hurdler barely clearing the hurdles. There are no extra points by clearing it higher; efficiency is the key with no wasted motion.

There is always some extra movement in speed pull-ups, as it is a power movement. Lactic acid, or specifically the Anaerobic Alactic system, sets in after 40 seconds or sooner, depending on your level of fitness. This event is purely Anaerobic Lactic, a duration between 40 sec and 2 minutes.

For the 30 minute and 60 minute records the pull-ups are stricter and truer to form. A pull-up or chin-up is not a pull-up; it is a “pull back then up” or else you would smack your head on the bar.

Matt’s Training Log - Saturday, October 20th

  • Few Warm up pull ups and exercises followed by:
  • 46 pull ups in 60 seconds with 2 cameras, paperwork, witnesses, timers. A New World Record!
  • Additional sets of 10-15 pull ups following

Total reps for the workout = 235

2 Videos are required for record purposes - one front view including legs and one close up on the chin:

@Luca - Records are made to be broken! Be sure to leave a note here when you break it.

He used his momentum… I call cheating! It looked like to me he swayed back and forth to get a rythem that helped push him there. comeon now look at the video? he did use momentum and you know it.

  8. Val on January 22nd, 2008 10:24 pm

You can’t do fast pull ups without a momentum…

no doubt about it that’s impressive…. but why is “there you go” playing in the background?… that alone is a 10 pull up deduction.. makes me feel like river dancing.

@ YB - sometimes, there are things beyond your control!

Just checked out your set list. At least all your songs are masculine, his is by PINK… But hey, (shrug), it’s all pink on the inside. Whatever motivates you. Kudos, Apollo Creed

@ YB - Next time, we’ll talk to the owners of “Fitness Together - Ruby Hill” in Livermore, CA. Must have been a Yoga or Pilates class going on at the same time.

Looked like a lot of lower body movement to me. I think this needs to be re-evaluated.

Leg kicks and lower-body movements cannot be used to gain momentum in the exercise. It was obvious this was happening.

  15. yeah on March 28th, 2008 8:37 am

Yeah i agree with mark i felt that was also a bit of lower-body movement to gain momentum.

  16. Mike on April 15th, 2008 11:27 pm

How much did he weigh when he broke the record?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  17. Jimson Lee on April 22nd, 2008 3:05 pm

    @Mike - Matt was 145 lbs.

  18. dennis on April 27th, 2008 11:50 am

Cool, I can do 30 pullups, aiming to do 40 soon, Gonna see if I can break your record. I am only 15 years old too.

    Best regards!

Hello Matt!!! I’m a CIRQUE DU SOLEIL Performer for the last 5 years here in Vegas In the show Zumanity, I saw your record in March of the present year… nice endurance!. I started doing pullups since then(like the idea of the “”momentum” NEEDED in Fast Pullups, that makes it easier. In July Guinness World Records will be in Mexico City (I’m Mexican). And I’m ready to try to do your record over there… As far as I know, Guinness calls the world champion(YOU) and the person attempting to brake the record (ME), and we both show up live in the TV show and… and it will be great to contact you before!

  22. Jason on September 4th, 2008 9:11 am

Don’t get me wrong that’s pretty damn impressive but doesn’t rule 6 say “Leg kicks and lower-body movements cannot be used to gain momentum in the exercise” and there’s a definite kip going on in the video.

  23. Alec Weeks on December 9th, 2008 8:50 pm

Oh nice, used a little leg movement there but hard not to at fast pass. Well I am currently at 42 in a minutes but I want to get it a little higher before I try for the WR. Great job though.

  24. Hector Franceschini on December 11th, 2008 9:37 pm

Not 1 of those pull-up’s counted. No record acknowledge here. That’s called crazy bouncing up & down and a sickly looking skeleton body. “Good God”, where do you find these people? I have a surprise waiting for that record. Try 1,000 correct Navy pull-up’s. This time clear the bar with your chin completely without bouncing.

I agree with most of the posters here, he cheated. Impressive none the less but kipping with his lower body, A person can do 3 times as many pullups doing it that way. I weigh 20 Pounds and can do about 25 pullups, I am going to cut 50 pounds and break the record. jk

  26. steve on January 25th, 2009 5:40 pm

If you are really aiming to break this record, can always cut off your legs to decrease body weight.

  27. Sam on January 28th, 2009 7:23 am

Man You got detest these non achieving padanticly critical losers! In any sport or competion that you get great at you tend to learn to do a movement in the most efficient way possible he is not dong pull ups in there strictest possible way to get a great workout on his lats and bi ceps hes trying to win a competition against competiters doin exactly the same thing which is within the rather strict rules so well done you have the highest strength to weight ratio in the world for pull ups!

  28. Craig on February 6th, 2009 6:41 pm

Nice, you broke the record for swinging around on a bar, next you should try for the pull-up record. I see people doing this shit at the gym, they don’t get that not only is it clearly not a pull-up but even to an absolute novice it doesn’t look even remotely impressive. Anyone that has actually done a real pull-up will find this laughable at best.

  29. Intruder on February 26th, 2009 4:27 pm

This must be bad for the arms. I thin it is stupid to make a competition for 1 minute.

Every one should have as much time as they need to pull up. (As long as they are hanging on a bar).

Once a record of 60-64 is set it would be nearly impossible to break it since a human isn`t a machine that has super sonic speed.

  30. Jody on April 8th, 2009 2:31 pm

Anything done at a fast speed like that is gonna make your body move. But I do agree, lets just have a record for the most pullups without dismounting the bar. atleast it would be beatable. For all you others that are whining about movement, lets see you do your best with or without swaying. If you think you are gonna keep your lower body still enough to thread a needle with, you aint gonna be knocking out very many

Got something to say?
