Gary Reed 1:43.68 - 800 meter National Record

July 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee

In May, I made this bold prediction about Gary Reed possibly running 1:43-mid to lower his personal best and National record:

Let’s take Canada’s Gary Reed for example. His PB for a 400m is 46.72 from 2003. His PB for 800m is 1:43.93 from that magic Rieti meet in Italy 2006. Take his […]

Nigeria Squeezes in 4×100m Relay for Beijing

July 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Last week I posted how the women’s Nigerian team missed the last spot by 0.04 seconds.

Well, The Gods Must be Crazy and magically they are in as the final qualifying spot with Finland and Cuba withdrawing, thus allowing 17th ranked Thailand and 18th ranked Nigeria into the relay.

On the Men’s side, Australia withdrew from the […]

400 Meter Training: 2 x 300m or 2×40 second Workout

July 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee

When Jeremy Wariner or Micheal Johnson does a 2 x 350 meter workout, those times are well under 40 seconds. That doesn’t mean YOU should do a 2 x 350 meter workout.
The purpose of this workout if for “speed endurance”, or to be exact, special endurance.
The ultimate goal of the workout is to reach […]

Track Dimensions: How Many Feet is 400 meters?

July 28, 2008 by Jimson Lee

The 400 meters is exactly 1312.34 feet or 437.2 yards.

Conversely, the 440 yard dash = 402.56 meters.

You can read a lot more on 440 Yard and 400 Meters Races from an earlier blog post where Tommie Smith ran 44.5 400 meters and 44.8 for 440 yards in the same race.

I am reflecting on my last […]

Walter Dix NIKE Spikes?

July 24, 2008 by Jimson Lee

I respect any athlete who gets a scholarship, especially a NCAA Div 1 scholarship, and stays the entire 4 years. Less than one percent of the 149,000 NCAA Division I athletes turn pro following their college career.

I respect athletes even more who go to school under their own terms, and preventing over racing in […]

Merlene Ottey Fails to Qualify for Eighth Olympics

July 24, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Last Week, I wrote about Merlene Ottey attempting to compete in eight Olympics.

In the article from NBCOlympics.com, they stated Jamaican-born Slovakian sprinter Merlene Ottey, 48 years old, failed in her final attempts to qualify for Beijing in the 100m to become the first athlete to compete in eight Olympics.

However, there is an error in that […]

4×100 meter Relay Fallouts and Politics

July 23, 2008 by Jimson Lee

It didn’t take long for all the finger pointing for those countries who did not qualify for the top 16 spots in Beijing.

Personally, I don’t see why the list can’t be expanded to 24 teams with a 3 heat semi-final (top 2 and 2 fastest times)

Last week I posted 4×100 meter Relay in Beijing from […]

Tryptophan Benefits - Good or Bad?

July 22, 2008 by Jimson Lee

To me, Tryptophan is bad for you, at least during a 400 meters sprint.

I used to consume Power Drive (Biotest) and Vitalyze (SNAC) one hour before my race as both products contains Tyrosine as the main formulation.

Tyrosine blocks the release of Tryptophan, which is the amino acid that gives you the sleepy sedative feeling, especially […]

Michael (Mike) Larrabee Olympic 400 Meters

July 21, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Mike Larrabee is famous for his “come from behind” or “even splits” 400 Meters Gold medal from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Americans swept the medals, and they didn’t repeat that feat until 400 meters in Athens 2004 with Jeremy Wariner, Otis Harris, and Derrick Brew.

Mike Larrabee also won a second Gold in the […]

4×400 meter Relay in Beijing

July 20, 2008 by Jimson Lee

On Friday, I wrote about the 4×100 meter Relay in Beijing. Here are the stats for the 4×400 meter Relay in Beijing.

The Mens side is no surprise. It takes 4 guys an average of 45 seconds to break 3 minutes. 45.75 from the lead-off leg, then 3 guys running 44.75 with a […]

Merlene Ottey - Queen of the Track

July 19, 2008 by Jimson Lee

This is insane beyond belief.

I was a high school junior in 1979 when Merlene Ottey first appeared in Track and Field. By my senior year in 1980, she had won her first bronze at the Moscow Olympics.

20 years later at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she won a silver in the relay for Jamaica.

From the […]

4×100 meter Relay in Beijing

July 17, 2008 by Jimson Lee

When I wrote “Jamaica 4×100m Relay Potential - A Sub 37 Second WR?”, it was before the USA Olympic trials where 6 Americans ran sub 10 seconds 100 meters performances (with a wind of +4 m/s).

No doubt this relay will be a hot ticket item in Beijing.

But if you look at the latest IAAF qualifiers […]

Tommie Smith John Carlos 40 Years Later

July 16, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Black Power Salute, 1968 Olympics, Mexico City Art Print

On October 16, 1968, this photo changed the world. Even in Canada the effects were tremendous.
You would think 40 years later these two men (children?) would settle their differences! They have 2 completely different versions on what happened on October 16, 1968. This story is from the […]

Bicarbonate Loading Raises Ethical Issues As Performance-Enhancing Aid

July 15, 2008 by Jimson Lee

I discussed the findings of Bicarbonate Loading in my monthly newsletter. At the time, I didn’t want this Blog to be the focus of drugs or ergogenic aids, at least not the banned and illegal ones.

It comes down to the ethical question of whether or not the athlete has a competitive advantage by taking […]

Videos of USAIN BOLT 19.67 seconds 200m in Athens

July 13, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Usain Bolt of Jamaica, the 100-meter world record holder, ran the fastest 200 this year in 19.67 seconds at a meet in Athens Grand Prix 2008. Amazingly, Bolt has not yet decided if he will run both races at the Olympics. This race ranks him as the 5th fastest man ever in the 200-meters.
Here is […]

Video of Speedo LZR Racers Controversy

July 12, 2008 by Jimson Lee

Here is a great video of the controversial swim suit from YouTube and CBC that was discussed yesterday.

Speedo is the official sponsor for Team USA and Team Canada, among others.

This story is no different than the 1984 Olympics when the American dominated cycling (both road and track) with the solid black spoke-less wheels and “conehead” […]
