Nigeria Squeezes in 4×100m Relay for Beijing
July 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Last week I posted how the women’s Nigerian team missed the last spot by 0.04 seconds.
Well, The Gods Must be Crazy and magically they are in as the final qualifying spot with Finland and Cuba withdrawing, thus allowing 17th ranked Thailand and 18th ranked Nigeria into the relay.
On the Men’s side, Australia withdrew from the men’s 4 x100m and was replaced by the Netherlands.
From the IAAF website:
Change to Relay Teams participating in Beijing
Monte-Carlo - Since the names of the national relay teams participating at the Games of XXIX Olympiad, Beijing 2008, were announced by the IAAF on Monday 21 July there has been one further change in recent days concerning the women’s 4 x100m.
One qualified nation, Finland, has subsequently informed the IAAF that they no longer wish to send a squad to participate in the women’s 4 x 100m relay.
Therefore, Nigeria, which was placed in 18th position in the qualification standings, is applicable to, and will compete in, Beijing.
This brings to a total of three the number of nations across the four relay events who had teams qualified but who have since declined their invitations to take part in the relays at the Olympics.
