Mind and Body
The Olympic Games are the ultimate expression of all that we have learned about training our minds and bodies to maximize performance. Athletes spend years preparing to compete, and coaches and trainers take advantage of everything that science has to offer:
- facilities that simulate the real conditions athletes face,
- diagnostic sensors that provide feedback for real-time adjustment of technique,
- food and drink to create a healthy body,
- clothing and equipment that minimize the effects of, or take advantage of, the external environment,
- biological supplements that enhance training and rest,
- highly-customized programs of physical exercise that tailor the routines to the needs and capabilities of each athlete for his or her sport,
- and mental conditioning to increase discipline and stamina
So what might happen if these technologies and techniques for learning become readily available to the general public? KnowledgeWorks Foundation’s 2006 Map of Future Forces Affecting Education is a forecast of the next ten years, and includes a trend called Kinetic Learning in Context. The 2009 Map, which will be released in January, includes an area called Altered Bodies – a collection of trends that forecast the increasing amount of agency that we will have over our physical and mental selves, as well as the increasing amount of effect the external environment will have on us - if we allow it.
Interfaces between man and machine, both digital and physical, are already rewiring the brain – will they improve the way we think and learn and train? Or will they cause us to abandon our basic foundations?
People are coming together to conquer their physical disabilities and learning disabilities and turn them into assets - will prosthetic body parts and concentration and attention drugs lead to ethical concerns about unfair advantages?
Ecological threats are on the rise - can education help prepare our citizens to live healthy lives? Will our schools fail to meet the increasing costs of a world in crisis?
All of these questions, and more, are answered by the 2009 Map. Stay tuned to learn more about the Future of Education!
