Key Factors for Success – Happy New Year

January 26, 2009 by Jimson Lee Leave a Comment

If you made (and broke) your resolutions on January 1, NOW is the time to start over again.

Why?

Because today is the Chinese New Year – The Year of the Ox.

If you are new to this blog, here are 6 good articles to start with. They have nothing to do with Track… well, at least not directly.

Success, from Track to Business, or from Health to Money, starts with the mindset. You have to re-program your mind if it’s not wired properly. This is very true for people with low self esteem, or with people who suffer from success self-sabotage.

We all grew up hearing repetitive phrases from various people, especially your parents and teachers. Repetition is the mother of skill. If you were told several times, “you’ll never amount to anything”, or “you’re a useless piece of sh.. “, I’m pretty sure you’ll end believing those words after 18 years. Thus your mind is made up of little “tapes” that is playing over and over again.

Take a look at Tiger Woods. Other than playing golf at a very young age (and I mean young!), you can tell how his father conditioned and programmed him at a young age on being a role model and how he carries himself in public.

Listen to him speak at press conferences. He’s not using queue cards… those responses come out gracefully because he’s programmed to say them naturally.

The Immediate Gratification Syndrome

Sometimes you have to take a step back before things start to click.

Here’s another another example of Tiger Woods with respect to changing his golf swing. After winning the 1997 Masters, he literally went into a 2 year well-documented slump from mid-1997 to June 1999.

His didn’t win the next day, but once he found his groove, the momentum was hard so stop. The 1999–2002 PGA era can be regarded as the domination of the “Tiger Slam”.

The same goes with track. If there is something wrong with your technique, fixing it won’t produce immediate results. It will feel awkward in the beginning, but once the mechanics are adjusted, the sky’s the limit.

You really have to get rid of that Immediate Gratification Syndrome. Why do you think you get so many spam emails on “Get Rich Quick” schemes or Penny Stocks? Because they know people want “Instant Gratification”.

Key Factors for Success

Here are 6 articles from the past which you should read at face value.

10 Success Tips: Highly successful people think differently than others. They are habitual optimists and generally have a positive/constructive attitude toward life. Optimists are focused on the future, feeling that the best is yet to come, while pessimists tend to focus on the negative and look to the past.

The Power of Writing Down Your Goals: It amazing what happens when you write down your goals. Or when you focus on excellence, rather than winning.

Personal Goal Setting & Planning Success: Arnold Schwarzenegger list of goals which he created BEFORE he came to America. And they came true.

Succeed through Passion, Honesty and Pursuit of Excellence: What is the biggest tip to achieving your goals? Write it down!

Attitude: Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how YOU REACT to it.

How to Build a Winning Team: 7 critical components to build a successful team and leadership. Applies to business, sports and life.
