Jack Daniels - The Art and Science of Running Video

March 3, 2009 by Jimson Lee

With the closing of the The High Altitude Training Center in Flagstaff, I thought to give Jack Daniels some shameless promotion for his book and DVD, though I really don’t think he needs it. This man dedicated his entire life to running, and his passion for the sport spills out in interviews and DVDs.

Daniels’ Running Formula

Dr. Jack Daniels’ resume includes NCAA Cross Country Coach of the Century, National Coach of the Year, and Runner’s World “World’s Best Coach”.

His DVD offers you insights into training and racing your best. Jack Daniels - The Art and Science of Running DVD contains over an hour and a half of Dr. Daniels’ genius - guiding you through his principles of training, his ingredients of success and intelligent training design plus stories about Gerry Lindgren, Jim Ryun, Alberto Salazar, Joan Benoit, and more!

You’ll probably have to watch it more than once, depending on your coaching and human physiology background.

There were some good “take home messages”.

The Broken Egg Theory

Why do some coaches insist on running athletes to the ground? Most inexperienced coaches overtrain their athletes which leads to injuries. Hence, the broken egg. What good is it now?

As a coach, you have one responsibility and that is not to mess up your athletes. You are their teacher and mentor, and the track is your classroom.

Adaptations to Training Stress

It takes 6 weeks for the body to adapt to a new training stress. Jack recommends waiting a minimum of 3-4 weeks before modifying the training program (hence the 4 week microcycle). I like to train 3 weeks hard followed by an easy week where we can do testing and time trials.
