Coach Glen Mills was Right - Usain Bolt can run 9.52
August 14, 2009 by Jimson Lee
It appears Coach Mills was right, based on extreme-value theory.
Last year when Usain Bolt’s coach Glen Mills claimed Bolt could run 9.52, I bashed him say it was impossible.
I analyzed Usain Bolt’s 10 meter splits from his 9.69 Beijing Olympic victory and extrapolated his last 10 meter segment, without the chest thumping.
A final 10 meter […]
IAAF 4×400 Meter Relay Split Times from Beijing 2008
February 24, 2009 by Jimson Lee
The IAAF article can be found here. Click here to download the PDF file.
How were these splits recorded?
Transponder antennas were laid under the track at the 0m, 100m, 200m and 300m. Athletes wore chips on the inside of their front bib numbers, so when they crossed the transponder threshold, a time was registered.
This sound […]
Usain Bolt Speed Reserve vs. Michael Johnson Speed Endurance?
February 19, 2009 by Jimson Lee
With all the hype about Usain Bolt’s 10 meter splits and speculation on what he could have run, I forgot to analyze the 200 meters! Shame on me!
I touched the topic of Speed Reserve in Part 1 and Part 2.
Usian Bolt’s 200m splits were clocked at 9.98 + 9.32 splits for his 200m. […]

Mondo Rubber Tracks and the Mondo Olympics
December 17, 2008 by Jimson Lee
What would Bob Hayes or Ben Johnson run on today’s new artificial track surfaces?
Mondo has been around since the 1976 Montreal Olympics for Track and Field (Athletics), but Beijing 2008 was the first time using the new Mondotrack.
Like the Speedo LZR swimsuits, the new Mondotrack from Mondo gives sprinters a technological advantage.
We witnessed World Records […]
Usain Bolt Puma Cell Mio - Where are They Now?
December 1, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Commercialism. Isn’t that what the Olympics are all about?
On the day before Usain Bolt set his record breaking 9.69 100 meter win in Beijing, PUMA announced the exclusive release of 180 pairs of Usain Bolt’s Puma Cell Mio on August 19th.
An updated version of Puma’s Cell cushioning and energy retention technology were used on […]
Usain Bolt Confirms Speedendurance.com Analysis
September 28, 2008 by Jimson Lee
When I analyzed the 10 meter splits of Usain Bolt’s 9.69 world record at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I claimed the 2 main reasons of his success were:
(1) he had the highest top end speed ever recorded for a 10 meter split (0.82 seconds per 10 meters, instead of 0.83 seconds) and,
(2) he had great […]
How Fast can Usain Bolt Run?
September 7, 2008 by Jimson Lee
It didn’t take long before the academic world analyzed and dissected the amazing 100 meter run by Usain Bolt at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
After I posted his splits, followed by his coach’s extrapolation of running 9.52, here is a scientific paper by H. K. Eriksen, J. R. Kristiansen, O. Langangen and I. K. Wehus from […]
Coach Says Bolt Could Have Run 9.52 in Olympics
August 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee
I don’t think so.
I analyzed Usain Bolt’s 10 meter splits from his 9.69 Beijing Olympic victory in a previous article.
If you extrapolate Usain Bolt’s last 10 meter segment, without the chest thumping, it would be fair to say he would have ran 0.84 or 0.85 seconds, making his 100m World Record 9.63 or 9.64.
Even a […]
World’s Fastest Nation Results: USA or Jamaica
August 25, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Who was the World’s Fastest Nation at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games? USA or Jamaica?
Jamaica had introduced the Fastest Nation Jamaica T-shirt before the Olympic Games!
Let’s take a look at the 7 sprint events that require starting blocks:
Here are a few random thoughts that come to mind:
USA owns the Men’s 400 meters and 400mH […]
Who Won the Shoes War? PUMA, NIKE or ADIDAS?
August 24, 2008 by Jimson Lee
In the Corporate Olympics, who won the world’s fastest spikes?
Like the Sports drinks and cola beverage industry, the sports shoes market is a highly competitive one, even more competitive than the Men’s 100 meters!
My first recollection of the Corporate Olympics was in 1972. Lasse Viren won the 5000 and 10000 meter double, and immediately […]
Heartbreak for Blanka Vlasic - Tia Hellabaut wins Gold High Jump
August 23, 2008 by Jimson Lee
One has to feel sorry for Olympic favorite Blanka Vlasic. She hasn’t lost a high jump competition in 35 meets, and was heavily favored to win the Gold medal.
After jumping cleanly through 2.03m, only Anna Chicherova and Tia Hellabaut cleared the same height, but with a total of 3 missed attempts each.
The high jump […]
Usain Bolt 100m 10 meter Splits and Speed Endurance
August 22, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Usain Bolt won the 100 meters because of his speed endurance.
I’ve said this all along, unless you are running a 40 yard dash or 50 meter sprint, sprinting the 100, 200, or 400 meters is all about speed endurance… reach your top speed, and maintain it. The winner of two athletes with the same […]
Jamaica Smashes 4×100m WR, Canada 6th
August 22, 2008 by Jimson Lee
In June, I predicted Jamaica could go sub 37.
The next big question is, what will be the order?
Usain Bolt ran the 3rd leg, when everyone expected him to run 2nd, the “longest leg” with his long strides.
This is silly, as the 3rd leg can also be the “longest leg”!
But Bolt ran the 3rd leg, which […]
Video of LaShawn Merritt Beijing Olympic 400 meter 43.75
August 21, 2008 by Jimson Lee
In stunning fashion, LaShawn Merritt upset Jeremy Wariner to win the Olympic Gold medal in 43.75.
LaShawn Merritt appeared to be left in the blocks with a 0.318 reaction time. But in a 400 meters, the reaction time is not as critical as your first 40-60 meters which sets you up for the entire race. […]
Beijing Men’s 4 x 100m Relays - Anything Goes!
August 21, 2008 by Jimson Lee
The 4 x 100m Relay was going to be a showdown between USA, Jamaica, and Great Britain.
However, from my experience witnessed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, “Anything Goes” (the Irving Berlin song).
In Semi-Final 1, USA, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa all dropped or missed the baton and DNF’ed. Trinidad won in 38.26, followed by Japan […]
World’s Fastest Nation: USA or Jamaica?

Let the Bragging Rights begin!
Who is the World’s Fastest Nation: USA or Jamaica?
Jamaica had introduced the Fastest Nation Jamaica T-shirt before the Olympic Games!
Let’s take a look at the 7 sprint events that require starting blocks. We are halfway through the Track and Field program and it’s a very tight race between these […]

A breakdown of what Usain Bolt needs to do to break Michael Johnson’s 200m world record
By Joe Battaglia, NBCOlympics.com
BEIJING — When Michael Johnson set the 200m world record of 19.32 seconds at the 1996 Atlanta Games, all of the factors that he needed to be perfect for […]
Usain Bolt 200m 19.30 Olympic World Record Video
August 20, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Who said Michael Johnson’s 19.32 World Record would last 50 years?
Try 12 years.
Usain Bolt shocked the world today with his 200m Olympic Gold Medal and World Record with a 19.30 performance. This time, there was no show boating, no pre-celebration BEFORE the finish line.
8 races. 6 days. 2 Olympic Gold medals. […]
Christine Ohuruogu Upsets Sanya Richards in 400m Final
August 19, 2008 by Jimson Lee
You got to have respect for the 400 meters.
Go too easy, you end up playing catchup (shades of Butch Reynolds Olympic 1988 come to mind)
Go too hard, you pay the price over the last 50 or 100 meters.
At least that’s what it appeared to be on live TV. Every Quarter-Miler knows the feeling […]
