What is Speed Reserve? Part 1 - 400 meter Sprinter types
January 5, 2009 by Jimson Lee
Before I discuss the topic of speed reserve, I want to talk about the different types of 400 meter sprinters.
Types of 400 meter runners
100/200 sprinters moving up to the 400m: In the past, short sprinters moving up the distance were rare. Remember Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire? Today, we’ve […]
Track and Field Starting Blocks Evolution
December 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Starting blocks were developed in the late 1920’s over the alternative of digging holes into the ground. They were patented in 1935, and have officially been used at the start of sprint races since 1937. Several iterations of starting blocks have been filed by the US patent office since then.
They have always been […]
Mondo Rubber Tracks and the Mondo Olympics
December 17, 2008 by Jimson Lee
What would Bob Hayes or Ben Johnson run on today’s new artificial track surfaces?
Mondo has been around since the 1976 Montreal Olympics for Track and Field (Athletics), but Beijing 2008 was the first time using the new Mondotrack.
Like the Speedo LZR swimsuits, the new Mondotrack from Mondo gives sprinters a technological advantage.
We witnessed World Records […]
Oslo 1998 - Mark Richardson and Iwan Thomas defeating Michael Johnson
December 14, 2008 by Jimson Lee
If you listened to the Iwan Thomas podcast, you’ll hear references of the 1998 Oslo 400 meter race where Mark Richardson and Iwan Thomas both defeated Michael Johnson. What is shocking is that this was MJ’s second 400m defeat going back to 1989.
Note how Richardson’s Lane 1 and Thomas Lane 6, which was the […]
PODCAST - 400 meter Training with Iwan Thomas
November 18, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Iwan Thomas is the current UK record holder at 400 meters with a time of 44.36 seconds. His best year was definitely 1998 where he won the gold at all 3 major “championship meets” that year, notably the IAAF World Cup, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.
He also won a silver medal at the 1996 […]
Last Ten 400 meters Dash Olympic Champions
November 17, 2008 by Jimson Lee
I was going to post the last ten 400 meters dash Olympic Champions, but decided to post the last 16 Olympic medalists since the post WWII “modern era”.
To read more about these athletes, click on the link under their name. Some names require no introductions.
This list is a classic, but it leaves me with […]

Clyde Hart at the European Athletics Coaching Conference
November 6, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Every time you hear Clyde Hart speak at a conference, he provides incredible insight as well as humour to coaching 400 meters sprinters. Sometimes you leave the room with more questions than answers. This is good, as coaching should be a discovery on what works (and what doesn’t work) for your athletes.
If you […]
Worlds Fastest Female Sprinter - in 4 inch heels?
October 23, 2008 by Jimson Lee
The only thing this post has to do with female sprinters is that we have females sprinting… in 9 cm heels.
I saw this video over a year ago, but I thought it was a one hit wonder, just like the 150 meter match race against Donovan Bailey and Michael Johnson.
I don’t know about you, but […]
Relaxation - The Key to Victory and Success
October 3, 2008 by Jimson Lee
NEWSFLASH: Running and Swimming Relaxed is the Key to Victory.
This old news. Everyone knows this.
But when this concept makes the New York Times, and references Clyde Hart, the Director of Track & Field and 4×400m coach at Baylor University, I thought it deserved some feedback.
It doesn’t matter if you are a surgeon, public speaker […]
Nike Zoom Victory Track and Field Spikes
September 24, 2008 by Jimson Lee
NOTE: These spikes are ideal for distances 800 meters and up, and will be available October 1, 2008
From NIKE Press release:
Weight wise, 100 grams has always been the Holy Grail for a track spike. When Michael Johnson came to Nike, designers did everything possible to shave weight from his spike to make it light […]
Terrell Owens Celebrations and Usain Bolt “Nuh Linga” Victory Dance
September 15, 2008 by Jimson Lee
In football, when you think of crazy (or stupid) post-touchdown celebrations, you immediately think of Joe Horn’s cell phone prank, or Terrell Owens “Sharpie” autograph signing.
Or, even worse, Terrell Owens 50-yard dash to the Dallas Star at the middle of the playing field. And he did that prank twice. The first time was […]
Coach Says Bolt Could Have Run 9.52 in Olympics
August 29, 2008 by Jimson Lee
I don’t think so.
I analyzed Usain Bolt’s 10 meter splits from his 9.69 Beijing Olympic victory in a previous article.
If you extrapolate Usain Bolt’s last 10 meter segment, without the chest thumping, it would be fair to say he would have ran 0.84 or 0.85 seconds, making his 100m World Record 9.63 or 9.64.
Even a […]
How to Run the Perfect 200 Meters

The following article is from NBCOlympics, used with permission.
A breakdown of what Usain Bolt needs to do to break Michael Johnson’s 200m world record
By Joe Battaglia, NBCOlympics.com
BEIJING — When Michael Johnson set the 200m world record of 19.32 seconds at the 1996 Atlanta Games, all of the factors that he needed to be perfect for […]
Usain Bolt 200m 19.30 Olympic World Record Video
August 20, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Who said Michael Johnson’s 19.32 World Record would last 50 years?
Try 12 years.
Usain Bolt shocked the world today with his 200m Olympic Gold Medal and World Record with a 19.30 performance. This time, there was no show boating, no pre-celebration BEFORE the finish line.
8 races. 6 days. 2 Olympic Gold medals. […]
The Nike Swift Suit and Nike Track Spikes
July 10, 2008 by Jimson Lee
I love technology.
But technology has to be available to everyone to be a level playing field.
Remember the 1972 Olympic pole vault controversy?
Bob Seagren won the gold medal in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic pole vault. In 1972, he had vaulted a world best 18 feet 5.75 inches that year using a carbon pole. The […]
David Neville - Anyone Who’s Run the 400 Knows How I Felt
July 7, 2008 by Jimson Lee
Lost in the action on Thursday’s USA 400 meter Olympic Trials final with LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner was David Neville’s Lane 8 “running scared and hanging on” 3rd place finish.
Anyone who’s run the 400 meters in Lane 8 will know what I’m talking about.
David Neville didn’t take the “victory lap” traditionally taken by the […]
Cambridge Mile in Bannister Conditions - How about Sprinters?
July 4, 2008 by Jimson Lee
The Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile commemorates Sir Roger Bannnister’s first sub four minute mile on a similar, crushed brick track at Oxford University.
This “Classic Mile” is growing to be one of the world’s most exciting and competitive one mile race. The event attracts a host of international caliber runners from around the globe. The first runner […]
Jeremy Wariner New Adidas Track Spikes
June 30, 2008 by Jimson Lee
I’ve been waiting for this article to come out.
There was a lot of news with Michael Johnson’s Golden Track spikes back in 1996.
And we are still waiting for the Asafa Powell spikes expected to make an appearance at Beijing. We’ll see if he wins a gold after Usain Bolts 9.72 World Record and Tyson […]
The Last 4×100m Mixed Team to Hold a World Record
June 30, 2008 by Jimson Lee
The last time a mixed team consisting of athletes from different countries setting a world record was the University of Southern California in 1967.
Ironically, the infamous O.J. Simpson ran the 3rd leg and handed it off to Lennox Miller of Jamaica in a time of 38.6 hand time.
Lennox Miller would later win a silver at […]
