In my recent article Gram and Calorie Calculator for Carbohydrate, Protein, and Fat , I mentioned the Atkins diet as one of the several types of fad diets out there. I received several email requests on elaborating this diet and lifestyle.

The Atkins diet was extremely popular because people actually lost weight!

Can you lose weight with the Atkins diet? Yes. Is it the best way? Not really. You can lose weight by several other means, including hazardous methods such as dehydration (i.e. saunas and steam rooms), amphetamines, and fasting. Are those good ways to lose weight? No, and they are NOT recommended.

If you downloaded the Excel spreadsheet calculator, and used it for your needs & lifestyle, you will find it extremely hard to limit your carbs to 20 grams a day. My carbohydrate numbers are in the 400 grams per day range!

Like any approach in life, moderation and common sense should rule.

Guest Blogger Michael Malega presents several Atkins Diet articles, in which one is presented here.

Good research has resulted into writing this article for you, I hope it helps. Knowing that you need to better understand this topic I recommend that you take Five minutes to read what we have to say.

The world today loves the idea of slim looking people. We see these people in magazines, on the television, and on beauty contests. In short we see them all over following various diets to help them achieve this look. One such diet that promotes this way of living is the Atkins diet. With the Atkins diet the way many people dieted changed forever.

In the Atkins diet you are introduced to a new way of living. With this method you will be re-educated about the types of low carbohydrate foods that you can eat. You will have to follow certain spartan rules in order for the Atkins diet to work for you.

There are Four stages of the diet that are necessary for any one who is on the Atkins diet to follow. These stages are the induction which is stage 1, in progress weight loss is level 2, pre-maintenance is the 3rd phase and stage Four is maintenance. In addition to following the diverse dietary rules of these various stages the Atkins diet also recommends that steady exercising and nutritional supplements are used as part of this low carbohydrate diet.

During the induction point of the Atkins diet it is possible to ache up to Fifteen pounds. This is achieved by restricting your sugar intake to 20 grams a day. You can have low carbohydrate vegetables in your diet like lettuce, broccoli and tomatoes, Yet you can’t eat yoghurt, fruit and any starchy vegetables like potatoes on an Atkins diet. You are not allowed to have any drinks like alcohol or anything that might be caffein based.

Supposedly during the induction phase of the Atkins diet you stabilize your blood sugar, and curb various wellness symptoms that originate from unstable blood sugar, like fatigue. In this stage you break diverse food addictions and you also ensure your cravings for difference

When you enter the Third and 4th stages of the Atkins diet you will have reached your ideal weight. It will be at this time that you get to increase your carbohydrate intake up to 60 grams per day. From this point on if you wishing to keep your weight at this level then you must stick to your Atkins diet for the rest of your life.

A word of cautiousness should be given. There are many medical facts that state that followers the Atkins diet will cause wellness problems for those on the diet. The reasons are many but the main ones are that our bodies need about 300 grams of carbohydrates for wellness and mentality activity to function properly.

However, so far the dieting seems to be working for many people on many different levels, so if you take things one step at a time, you should be able to find that with the Atkins diet you’ve found asure-fire winning way to permanent weight loss. And what could be better than that?

Yes Atkins works well to lose weight, it is during the maintenance phase after you’re reached your goal weight that I think Atkins falls short. Let’s face it a banana and a glass of milk will give you 35-40 grams of carbohydrates. How wants to stay away from all the great bread, potato, pasta, fruit and rice dishes for THE REST OF THEIR LIVES! There are much beeter alternatives to Atkins, unless you want to use just the initial phase for some quick weight loss. Atkins is not a viable long term diet approach for most people.

Steve, I agree with you, it’s not a long term approach to weight loss, but I know several athletes using the “Atkins lifestyle” (they hate calling it a “diet”) and the only side effect is their ketone breath.

The Atkins diet is extremely popular because people actually lost weight! South beach diet also burns out those unwanted calories and both diets restrict carbohydrate intake. The premise is that if the body gets fewer carbs then it will tap into the fats sooner creating greater calorie burn.

Hey, I was about 45 pounds overweight, then I got type 2 diabetes, pretty much got my act together overnight, after that…..NO MORE SUGAR, seriously, this works like a charm. cut out sugar and high and medium glycemic foods. Im sure we’ve heard it a thosand times but the weight will fall off within months, even without additional exercise.
    Just have patience.
    All the best. Dave

Contrary to popular belief the atkins diet does not advocate a complete zero carbs approach to dieting. Its true that the initial phase involves almost no carbs at all but by phase 4 (the maintainance phase) reasonable ammounts of healthy carbs are acceptable.

Atkins is an unhealthy diet. In fact, the doctor who invented this method was not willing to do it himself. In theory, yes, it does make you lose weight, but it cuts the wrong things in the wrong ways. You should get into a program that bases all your needs on you, and go from there.
