I’m going to make a bold prediction here.

If Tyson Gay decides to run the 200 at Manchester, just like Sanya Richards, I predict he will break the world record.

But I’m not talking about the 19.19 WR set by Usain Bolt.

I am referring to the 200 straightaway WR set by Tommie Smith, a 19.5 HT or 19.74 FAT.

Why not?  Last year, Tyson opened up the season with a 200m in a scorching 19.58 at the Reebok meet.

Surely with a straight track, weather permitting and favorable wind conditions, he can run under 19.74 post-groin surgery?

If you want to get picky, then it’s really a World’s Best rather than a World Record.

And, yes, I will stop calling you “Shirley”…

If you want to see how they make a track on a road surface, see my article on the The Making of Manchester and Temporary Tracks

I agree. And if he’d run it during the Summer months it’d be even faster.
But anyway. Does anybody know what was Erich Borchmeyer’s profession; you know the German sprinter who was in the same final with Owens in 1936. He was born in 1905 and passed away in 2000. I have heard that he would have been a waiter on ships in the 50s, but I have not found any confirmation for that.

If anyone would know that answer, Gary G from Albany NY would know!

      Gary?

Thanks. The fact is that my father told me this story; he and others were on a ship from Finland to Germany in the mid-50s and the waiter told them that he was that Borchmeyer who ran in 1936. Well, I guess the person could have been one of the other sprinters, or maybe he was just having fun.

No, don’t know Borchmeyer’s profession, his lifetime bests though were; 10.3 and 21.4 in 1933, great for that era and cinder tracks.

Yes, great times, but what about being wind-assisted?But then again, that’s another era. Another one comes to my mind. From the 70s. What to your mind is the best T&FN front page ever? To me it was and maybe still is when Houston McTear ran 100yds WR at 9.0 and the front page read with his picture: “”Houston McTear Fast”. That tells you the whole story.

Before moving to Europe, I donated all my T&F magazines except the covers of WR performances… Sotomayor HJ, MJ 400m 43.18 and Mike Powell’s Long Jump. I have a nice LIFE magazine collection, too.

T&F is better than LIFE magazine. T&F is blood, sweat and tears. LIFE magazine is…Tears(?)

I was referring to LIFE magazine from the 1940-70’s. The Frank Shorter cover was my favorite, because it was my first Olympics (on TV).

Exactly! Re Bolt. I am right or wrong: has his calves been operated?

    Hey all,

I watched the games in Manchester, and Tyson Gay did break the 200 metres world record!
