Is it Too Late to Go Back to School?

June 17, 2011 by Jimson Lee Leave a Comment

There was a guy named Scott Powell, who used to sing in a Rock and Roll group from 1969 until he left for medical school in 1980 at Columbia University.

Today, Dr. Scott Powell is a member of the medical staff of U.S. National Soccer teams, and is the team physician for the Federation Women’s National Team and an associate clinical professor at USC.

So what’s the big deal?

Who the Heck is Scott Powell?

Columbia University was the birthplace for the nostalgic Rock band called Sha Na Na back in 1969.  They had a variety TV show series that ran from 1977 to 1981 (my high school and JC years) and also was featured in the movie Grease.

Scott Powell’s stage name was ‘Santini’, sang most of the Elvis songs in the group and often wore gold lamé outfits.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

The moral of the story is, it is never too late to go back to school and pursue your dreams.  Look at Peter Snell.  Not everyone will make the big money like Usain Bolt.

After I finished my undergrad in Physiology, I went back to school and studied Computers (Information Technology) and graduated 7 years later.  With those two degrees, I enjoyed several years working at the RCMP Forensic Laboratory and set up 5 out of the 6 PCR DNA labs across Canada.  (Sorry Halifax to leave you hanging!)

Here is Sha Na Na’s rendition of Now or Never with Santini as lead vocal.  (Facebook and RSS readers click here)
