This is Part 2 of my Lake Tahoe Marathon experience. Click here for Part 1.
Dick Beardsley was a guest speaker at the 2011 Lake Tahoe Marathon
He is famous for the race he didn’t win.
If you don’t know who Dick Beardsley is, read Duel in the Sun by John Brant.
True, he ran a 2:08.53 and came second to Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon.
But he ran a 2:09:37 at the 1981 Grandma’s marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, back in the days when a sub 2:10 was a big deal. Especially for Americans.
In the Podcast below, there are three great highlights, which are “must hear” recordings:
- The serendipity involved before he ran his 2:09 PR marathon. Or was it fate?
- His experience at his first and only 50 miler Ultramarathon. Yes, he split the 26 mile “halfway” point in 3 hours!
- 4 points to his secret in life and maybe running a PR
I won’t ruin the stories, as it is best you hear them for yourself. It’s not super long, only 16 minutes in total.
But what a great inspiration to everyone… Dick Beardsley is a class act, no matter what problems he may have had in his past.
He is a true fighter.
