A reader emailed me asking for the video for Koji Ito’s 10.00 or Shingo Suetsugu’s 10.03 100 meter personal bests. Koji Ito and Marian Woronin both had PBs of 10.00 seconds.
In this YouTube video, Ito runs a 10.00 in the semi-final of the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, easing up over the last few strides. You can see the jubilation of his emotions as the photo-electric clock displayed 9.99 before it was rounded up to 10.00. Just like Marian Woronin’s 9.991 was rounded up to 10.00.
Okay, maybe the TV commentators were more emotional. And you all thought Carol Lewis was bad!
The Japanese men’s 4x100m team of Nobuharu Asahara, Koji Ito, Shigeyuki Kojima, Shingo Suetsugu finished 6th in 38.66s at Sydney 2000.
Koji Ito never again matched the form of the 1998 season and retired in 2002
Ito’s National Record was also the Asian record until Samuel Francis of Qatar ran 9.99 (+0.9) in 2007.
UPDATE: Sorry, the video is no longer on YouTube.
Great vid…that guy is insanely fast. Kinda messed up/funny when it rounds up to 10 like you stated.
